Vodacom Tanzania has launched a service which enables its M-Pesa clients to receive money from Western Union worldwide. The service enables M-Pesa users in Tanzania to receive money from 108,000 agents serving in 65 countries with Western Union services. This will enable the M-Pesa clients in Tanzania to withdraw they money from the over 15,000 agents in Tanzania.

Users will not be charged any extra amount to withdraw money received from abroad but will just pay the normal withdrawal charges

Vodacom Managing Director Rene Meza said ;

“We have introduced this service to our clients to give them access of sending and receiving funds even when they are abroad. If your mobile operator works with Western Union using the mobile money transfer service could potentially be like having access to 200 countries and over 435,000 agent locations in your pocket, “he said.

The Western Union would allow anyone to use the mobile money transfer service even if they didn’t have a mobile phone through three ways which were cash to mobile, mobile to cash and mobile to mobile.

The most unfortunate part of this arrangement is that M-Pesa users cannot send money to M-Pesa users in Tanzania, South Africa or Afghanistan but have to go through the likes of Western Union. Very unfortunate.
